About

Coach, whose method is built on years of experience.

My name is Michal Ščepko and I am a strength and conditioning coach. For 14 years I have been collecting coaching experience and connecting it with what I learned in places where training is not a hobby, but a matter of survival. Today I translate it into real life.

My story

From the barracks to coaching.

My love for sport started in 1991, when my mother signed me up for a swimming group at the Sports Diving Club. Love for water, discipline and competitiveness turned into results in fin swimming and classic swimming competitions. I represented my club and school at different events. When I started secondary school, I added the gym to swimming and began learning how to train.

After finishing secondary school, I stopped competitive swimming and kept it only recreationally, but lifting weights became a bigger part of my life. After joining the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic in 2002, I started combining strength work, running, calisthenics and swimming in different ways.

During my time in the USA from 2007, I benefited from that base and went through different types of training, including US Army PT, PT Rangers, pool trainings with Para Jumpers and later US NAVY SEALs. It was with the SEALs that I discovered CrossFit in all its forms. At first it was physically extremely demanding, but resistance quickly turned into love for this training style and my conditioning progressed massively.

In 2012 I trained at Kandahar CrossFit in Afghanistan, where I also took part in competitions. I started training soldiers, and that led me to the idea of building a gym where I could apply my experience and bring functional training to the public in Sereď.

In 2012 I officially started my coaching career and turned my experience into a coaching certification. GIRYA CROSS GYM was founded in January 2013 to bring athletes together and provide sport activities for the public. The name comes from the original name for the kettlebell, GIRYA, one of the most effective and versatile training tools.

The training sessions started gaining traction. When some clients began competing, placing well and wanting to go higher, I understood that my experience and knowledge were not enough and I had to move forward. In 2015 I started the demanding but valuable CCP coaching course by OPEX. It opened the world of professional coaching, evidence-based methods and support from top coaches around the world.

Later Attila Végh invited me to a selection process for his professional preparation for a major fight. When he chose me, I had to make a major life decision: either end my career as a professional soldier and fully commit to coaching, or turn it down. After more than 20 years, I decided to leave the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic and go fully into coaching. Today I train clients of different ages and goals, both online and in person.

Philosophy

How I train people today.

Discipline without drill

In the military I saw that shouting and pressure only work short term. Real change comes from a system you understand and trust.

The body is a tool for life

We do not train for the mirror. We train so you can function at work, with your kids, in the mountains and twenty years from now.

Respect for the process

Even SEALs do not skip the basics. Progress is built layer by layer, patiently and measurably.

Cooperation

Preparation of Attila Végh.

The cooperation with Attila Végh was one of the moments that moved me from a career as a professional soldier into full-time coaching.

It started in November 2022 at Spartakus Fight Gym and continued through a coach selection process, diagnostics and systematic strength and conditioning preparation. I wrote the whole story separately.
